Children Are Being Frightened
Remember being afraid of ghost as a small child and having sleepless nights after a terrifying program? Violence on television can create an atmosphere in which children's attitudes become pessimistic and fearful. More than one thousand scientific studies and reviews conclude that significant exposure to media violence increases the risk of aggressive behavior in certain children, desensitizes them to violence and makes them believe that the world is a ‘meaner and scarier’ place than it is (Tompkins 1). Whenever a crime happens in the world, the media blows it up into a huge scandal so that it is interesting to the human brain. Sometimes the truth is stretched in order to draw more attention. This may cause the story to be “meaner and scarier” than what really is going on. When this is exposed to children, they take the impression that it is certain to happen to them. A new study done in the US has shown that children exposed to media before bedtime, or violent content in the media, are more likely to experience sleeping issues (TV before Bed Causes Nightmares in Children 1). Some parents act as if it is normal that their children are experiencing issues while sleeping. Some of these children may fear of a fire burning their house down, as this is shown on the news once this fire is started. Kids are more impressionable than adults, and the violent acts on television can create an impression of a bleak and terrible world. It is no wonder how television can frighten children so easily.
