This packet is about basketball and how it has influenced my life.
Acrostic Poem
Getting extra practice in the mornings before basketball season started was important to me. I would go in and shoot 500 shots every morning so I could have a good shooting percentage. Then in the afternoons I would go in again and work on my moves. This poem is about my dedication that I had during this time.
Elegy
Tomorrow has started without the blue,
And my eyes keep on tearing too. I have been blessed in several different ways, And have taught me several lessons. But now I have to set that chapter of my life away. Now I can’t represent my school by dressing, In the snazzy uniform that I adore Now I will find another way To show off my skills until I’m old and grey High school basketball will be missed But there are plenty of other ways to reach bliss. Thanks for teaching me how to be successful, I will carry this on so my future will be eventful. |
After our last basketball game, I realized that I will never represent Shepherd in a basketball uniform again. It was a sad day, but I am thankful for all of the opportunities that the program has given me.
Just Because
Just because I'm white
Don't underestimate my skill Don't think that I can’t play Still pick me to be on the team Just because I’m white It doesn't mean I don’t get buckets It doesn't give anyone superiority over me It doesn't stop me from working hard in the gym Just because I'm white Still let me play Can't wait until I ball out Just because I'm white -- please don’t stereotype me |
Sports are filled with stereotypes, and basketball is no exception. Many spectators see a black player and right away believe that they are the best player on the court. However, some of the best players are white. This poem shows my struggle of being stereotyped on the court.
Free Verse
When I fire up a shot people better believe,
That nothing but net is all that will be see. When I cross them up and break some ankles, Their defense is gonna look all dismantled. When I’ve got them on lockdown, They better pass the ball cuz they will be shutdown. I should make them scared, Go ahead and try to drive it to the hole. Go ahead I give the dare I’m better than them, maybe they should just go bowl. |
Confidence is very important in any sport, especially basketball. This poem shows off the confidence that I played with in games and practices, along with the open gyms I still play at.
I Don't Understand
I don't understand
why the release feels awkward why the hype is not there why the fans are not screaming But most of all why injuries happen why the shots are not falling why we don’t execute why we’re better but still lose What I understand most is why I am the greatest why everyday is a new day why struggles turn into success why we still have fun |
Every basketball season comes with some adversity. Many players will find themselves struggling a couple of times throughout the year, but learn that they need to keep practicing in order to overcome the circumstances.
Haiku
The message behind this Haiku is the feeling that comes from dribbling a ball in open space. Once I get going with a basketball, I get that sense that no one can get in my way.
Limerick
After a basketball practice, our team would end the day off by showing off our dunking skills. One of our teammates went outside to grab something while walking through the snow and when he came back inside to try and dunk, he slipped and fell right onto his back. Everyone started laughing at his despair.
Lyric Poem
[Bridge]
Pull up (Swish), Ball out (Swish) Buckets (Swish), crossover (Swish) And one (Swish), free throw (Swish) Fade away (Swish), fade away (Swish) [Verse 1] Now I done grew up always getting buckets Tryna find an open gym, so i can get my stroke down Sometimes I like the way it feels, sometimes it makes me feel in sorrow Sometimes I just wasn’t focused, that was my problem I was in a lone room, loud tunes, looking to make a vow soon That I'ma get it right, lost in my imagination, I see the crowd mood Tickin’ down is the minutes and the score is too close Took a dribble then a pulled up, then it occurred to me: [Hook] "Ballas gotta work harder theres only one more chance I just gotta keep shooting First I get a gym full of space, then I ball in it Gym full of space, then I ball in it I go outside with my ball, then I watch 'em all flock All the girls wanna play Baywatch I got a court full of chicks and they drool over me Court full of chicks, and they drool over me" |
After every basketball season comes the spring sports. Usually it is still cold and snowy outside, so it was a pain to find an unoccupied gym. When I finally was able to find an open one, I would get a good workout in. Sometimes I shot great, other times I struggled. Music was a must to help pump me up. While shooting I would occasionally picture myself in the last seconds of a game, taking the last shot. When leaving to go home, there would be plenty of ladies waiting for me (Or at least I wished). This song is based off of the rythym of my favorite song, Swimming Pools by Kendrick Lamar.
List Poem
Many thoughts flow through my mind during practices and games, these were some of the ones that occurred to me most common.
I Am Poem
I am
Tough, Intelligent, Athletic. I enjoy working at my craft and getting stronger. Pride is essential. Hard Workers make me delighted. Attitudes are important to me. Laziness is awful, but sometimes rest is essential. Athletes deserve to be trained. Hard work leads to a better life. Confidence is important for a healthy mind. This is me. |
One of the most important ideals to me is a hard work ethic. When I get on a basketball court, I prided myself with my own work ethic, always striving to get better.
Creed
I believe in the art of the jump shot
the beautiful sound of the net swish the perfect release of the ball the path the ball takes to the cup the time it takes to work at, develop, perfect, and execute. But the people who think that excellence comes without work is outrageous I believe in the hard work it takes I believe in the amount of reps needed I believe in blood, sweat, tears, and the courage to persevere And I believe in the fun in the game of basketball |
The jump shot is one of the most important fundementals in basketball. I strived to create a smooth jumper of my own with hundreds of hours of practice. People need to understand that talent is not just given, athletes work at their craft in order to be in the position that they are.
Wordle
There are many different basketball terms said throughout practice and games. These are some of my favorite sayings all put together using a wordle creator.
